Director: Janeen Damian
Starring: Miranda Cosgrove, Pierson Fodé, Frances Fisher
Running Time: 107 minutes
Synopsis: Texas small-town girl Dawn (Miranda Cosgrove) is accepted to an art school in Paris, France, but does not have the necessary travel funds. On a whim she auditions for The Honeypot dating reality show, with the next season set to be filmed in Paris. She is accepted as a contestant, but disappointed when the production lands in Paris, Texas. Dawn does her best to get kicked-off the show, but starts to fall in love with the eligible millionaire bachelor Trey (Pierson Fodé), who will choose the winner.
What Works Well: The Texas setting is a welcome break from typical New York and London rom-com scenery, and poking fun at reality dating shows is entertaining, although also all too easy. Miranda Cosgrove brings adequate down-to-earth charm in the lead role, and Pierson Fodé offers Matthew McConaughey-type attitude wrapped in muscular eye candy.
What Does Not Work As Well: The main plot point is in the title, and suffering through the faux filming of a dating show populated by vacuous contestants is almost worse than watching an actual episode. The rules around accepting or rejecting money or love on The Honeypot are made-up and changed on the fly to suit the whims of the featherlight script.
Key Quote:
Dawn (furious when the plane lands): We're in Paris, Texas! What we've just been up circling for 9 hours?
Rachel (the show's producer): You're not wrong, that was not very green of us.
