Director: Iain Morris
Starring: Sofia Carson, Corey Mylchreest, Dougray Scott
Running Time: 113 minutes
Synopsis: American Anna (Sofia Carson) heads to Oxford University for one year of poetry studies, with a plan to return to the US and start a position at an investment bank. At Oxford she quickly develops an attraction to her stand-in professor and Doctor of Philosophy student Jamie Davenport (Corey Mylchreest). Anna believes their affair is just for fun, but then discovers more about Jamie, causing her to question her life's plans.
What Works Well: The Oxford locations are picturesque, although the outdoor settings are also suspiciously devoid of people. Too little and altogether too late, the final five minutes finally find an emotional resonance.
What Does Not Work As Well: The writing believes it's clever for a seemingly smart American young woman to get excited about eating fish and chips and experiencing a pub environment - because English culture is so foreign and exotic. Everyone pretends that a romantic relationship between a professor and his student is A-OK, and the entire Oxford educational experience is limited to one chill class - sufficient for a student to then become a professor. Eventually, the already skimpy plot aimlessly meanders from romance to tragic disease (but everyone always looks so healthy) complete with father-son issues, and trite you-don't-plan-life-because-life-plans-you faux profundity.
Key Quote:
Jamie: Poetry can be taught, but really, it should be tried. Allow it to change your life.
