Movie Review: Subservience (2024)

Genre: Artificial Intelligence Thriller
Director: S.K. Dale
Starring: Megan Fox, Michele Morrone, Madeline Zima
Running Time: 106 minutes

Synopsis: When his wife Maggie (Madeline Zima) is suddenly hospitalized to await a heart transplant, construction foreman Nick (Michele Morrone) purchases advanced lifelike android Alice (Megan Fox) to help care for his two young children. Alice's artificial intelligence is programmed to prioritize all of Nick's needs, but she grows increasing possessive at the expense of his relationship with his wife and children.

What Works Well: The benefits and dangers of intelligent robots displacing humans are on full display in this adequate thriller. Not only does Alice fully dedicate herself to satisfying Nick, at work his entire construction crew is replaced by efficient androids. Director S.K. Dale introduces the context with only subtle hints of suspense, Megan Fox excelling with head tilts and slight suggestions of a deviating purpose. The second half fully embraces the horror of emotional and physical carnage unleashed on a sideswiped family.

What Does Not Work As Well: Every opportunity to imagine a faulty AI's idea of threats and violence is missed. Instead, once Alice is fully evil, her malevolence is disappointingly routine and lifted from any off-the-shelf thriller. The final showdown occurs at a suspiciously empty hospital.

Key Quote:
Alice: I don't get tired. I'm strong, obedient, I have no desires outside of fulfilling yours.
