Children Of Bodom's second studio CD presents a steadily maturing collection of songs, anchored by three classics: Bed Of Razors, Towards Dead End, and Downfall.
Bed Of Razors features a hypnotic, groovy power interchange between Laiho's lead guitar and Warman's keyboards; in Towards Dead End, Laiho takes us on an unforgettable sonic journey that has become symbolic of the Bodom sound. Downfall is the most mature track on the CD and a signature Bodom song, featuring a simple but stunning riff that charges fearlessly into a fast melodic groove.
Two other tracks on Hatebreeder, Silent Night, Bodom Night and Children Of Bodom, are almost as good and add great depth to the CD. The weakest track is Wrath Within, still above average but relatively aimless.
Bodom's sound on Hatebreeder is still satisfyingly raw; the pace changes sound deliberate and studied, rather than flowing smoothly, and some song segments are not as tight as they can be. Laiho screams the incomprehensible vocals, but is a much better guitarist than a singer. The band behind him sounds good, with Warman's keyboards as usual the most prominent.
Overall, Hatebreeder is an important evolutionary CD in the history of one of the best metal bands of the past 10 years.
